Spring is the allergy season for millions of Americans. In the search for relief, many are turning to "natural" remedies to alleviate their symptoms.

30-Second Summary

As 35 million Americans prepare to battle springtime allergies, studies have surfaced that offer positive reports on treatments that can be used as alternatives to pharmaceuticals, ABC News reports.

Such remedies include irrigating the sinuses with Indian neti pots, ingesting herbs such as American stinging nettles and perilla, eating locally made honey and using air filters.

“I wasn’t thrilled about running out to get a neti pot and then start putting water into my nose at first either,” neti pot user Brad Isaac writes on the blog Lifehacker. “I went from having 8–10 sinus flare-ups and/or colds a year to about 1 per year.”

Dr. Woodson Merrell
of New York's Beth Israel Medical Center recommends that "gentler, natural approaches combining conventional medicine and lifestyle changes" should become the standard treatment.

Over-the-counter and prescription medications such as Claritin, Zyrtec and Benadryl can cause side effects such as drowsiness, impaired vision, constipation, confusion, racing heart and a proliferation of yeast colonies.

“In most situations, medications serve as a Band-Aid providing no cure, temporary relief and a list of side effects,” herbalist Jean Munoz told California paper the Colfax Record. However, Munoz also acknowledged that medications can be life-saving in the case of severe allergic reactions.

April is the “prime time” for pollen and seasonal allergies, says Dr. Weily Soong of Alabama Allergy and Asthma Center. And with symptoms that include sneezing, runny nose and itchy, watery, red eyes, most Americans probably won’t mind eating two spoonfuls of honey to alleviate their allergies.
