Philippe Petit, who walked between the two World Trade Center buildings on a tightrope in 1974, is the subject of the documentary “Man on Wire.”

30-Second Summary

Philippe Petit, the subject of “Man on Wire,” says, “This film is about life: The life of the towers and the life of a mad poet aided by a few friends who clearly did the impossible.”

Avoiding the type of spotlight that might cheapen his endeavors, Petit has nevertheless been passionate about publicly expressing himself through the arts. “I am the poet of the high wire—I never do stunts I do theatrical performances,” he said. Appropriately, a play in England was based on his memoirs, and an award-winning children’s book tells the story of his famous walk.

Director James Marsh notes that the new documentary does not stress any connection to the September 11 attacks; rather, it is a “kind of a bank-robbery film,” focusing on the conspiring that lead to Petit’s daredevil walk.

However, Petit has mourned the loss of the towers personally, as evidenced by an opinion piece in the The Wall Street Journal.
