Dave Howard, the Mets vice president of baseball operation, explained to the New York Daily News that Joel was the perfect choice to sing Shea's swan song.
“As we started talking about who would write that final chapter of the amazing rock 'n' roll history, we could think of no one better," he said.
Shea has been a music venue since the Beatles' ground-breaking performance there in 1965. It has hosted some of rocks legendary names, including the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Police, Simon & Garfunkel, Elton John and Eric Clapton.
With this concert, Billy Joel will have played at all three major New York stadiums: Yankee, Giants and now Shea.
He is expected to perform a few Beatles songs as a tribute to their 1965 Shea performance—the first concert to be performed at an outdoor stadium.
Tickets go on sale Feb. 16.
