USA men's basketball triumphed over Spain 118-107, their first gold in eight years. Dwyane Wade led the team with 27 points and hit a clutch three in the final minutes to put away the feisty Spanish team. Earlier in the day, defending champion Argentina won the bronze with a 87-75 win over Lithuania.

Sammy Wanjiru won the men’s marathon in and Olympic record 2 hours, 6 minutes, 32 seconds, becoming the first Kenyan to win a marathon gold. Morocco’s Jaouad Gharib won silver and Ethiopia’s Tsegay Kebede won bronze. The top American finishers were Dathan Ritzenhein and Ryan Hall, who finished ninth and tenth.

The U.S. men’s volleyball team beat defending champion Brazil in four sets to win the gold medal. It capped an emotional Olympics for the team after the father-in-law of coach Hugh McCutcheon was stabbed to death on the opening Saturday. In earlier action, Russia beat Italy for the bronze.

Russia won the gold medal in rhythmic gymnastics group all-around for the third straight Olympics. China won silver, while Belarus took the bronze.

In men's handball, France crushed Iceland's hopes of bring home the country's first ever gold medal, with a 32-28 win. France held the lead throughout the game, with Nikola Karabatic scoring eight goals and goalie Thierry Omeyer making nine saves. Spain won the bronze, beating Croatia 35-29.

Hungary took home a third consecutive gold medal in men's water polo with a 14-10 win over the U.S. Daniel Rudolf Varga and Peter Biros led the Hungarians, scoring three goals each. In the bronze medal game, Serbia beat Montenegro 6-4 in a game between countries that split just two years ago.

China won in 50th and 51st gold medals of the games in light heavyweight and light flyweight boxing. The Chinese finished with 100 medals, second only to the United States with 109, though the U.S. had only 36 golds.

The closing ceremony was highlighted by performances by Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and tenor Placido Domingo with Chinese soprano Song Zuying. “Tonight, we come to the end of 16 glorious days which we will cherish forever. Through these Games, the world learned more about China, and China learned more about the world,” announced IOC President Jacques Rogge. “These were truly exceptional games.”
