Americans Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser defeated Brazilians Marcio Araujo and Fabio Luiz Magalhaes in the men’s beach volleyball final on Friday in three sets. The American tandem of Misty May-Treanor and Kerrie Walsh had already won gold in women’s beach volleyball.

The U.S. men’s volleyball team took five close sets to defeat Russia and advance to the finals. “The U.S. overcame late three-point deficits to win each of the first two sets in front of a flag-waving, pro-Russian crowd at Beijing’s Capital Gymnasium, which echoed throughout the match with chants of ‘Ro-ssi-ya,’” according to Bloomberg.com.

Belarus won two events in flatwater canoeing and Britain's Tim Brabants took gold in the men's kayak single (K1) 1000m. Hungary was victorious in the men's canoe single (C1) 1000m, while Germany won the women's kayak four (K4) 500m and men's kayak double (K2) 1000m.

The U.S. lost 10-2 to Cuba in the baseball semifinals. Cuba advances to the final against South Korea, who beat Japan 6-2 earlier in the day. The U.S. and Japan will play for the bronze on Saturday.

Dutchman Maarten van der Weijden, a leukemia survivor, won the first men’s 10-kilometre swimming marathon in Olympic history. “The pain and fatigue that you feel in the water is what I went through for a whole year to beat the cancer, so I know what to expect,” said van der Weijden.
