On the final day of artistic gymnastics, three-time silver medalist Shawn Johnson won the gold on the balance beam. All-around gold medalist Nastia Liukin won silver, while China’s Cheng Fei won the bronze.

China won its sixth and seventh gold medals in men’s gymnastics, as Zou Kai won the horizontal bar and Li Xiaopeng won parallel bars. Jonathan Horton won silver on the horizontal bar, the Americans’ only individual medal in men’s gymnastics.

Christine Ohuruogu of Great Britain won the women’s 400-meters, beating Jamaican Shericka Williams and American favorite Sanya Richards. Ohuruogu, who was given a one-year ban in 2006 for missing three drug tests, won a Court of Arbitration for Sport case to compete in these Olympics.

Brenda Villa scored with a minute left as the U.S. women’s water polo team defeated Australia 9-8 in the semifinals. They will play for the gold on Thursday against the Netherlands, who beat Hungary 8-7.

American beach volleyball phenoms Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh won their semifinal game against Brazil in straight sets to advance to the beach volleyball final. The team plays the winner of the semifinal game between two Chinese teams, Tian Jia and Wang Jie. “We’re not done. We are absolutely not done,” Walsh said.

The U.S. women’s basketball team routed South Korea 104-60 to advance to the semifinals. Sylvia Fowles led the team with 26 points and 14 rebounds.

American pole vaulter Jenn Stuczynski picked up a silver medal on Monday, losing to charismatic Russian world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva. Stuczynski made the mistake of saying she hoped to “kick some Russian butt” before the showdown, which only motivated Isinbayeva more. The rivalry is now official, CNN says. Meanwhile, Slate has been twittering about the Olympics, and the latest discussion touched on Stuczynski’s coach, Rick Suhr, who seemed disappointed by his athlete’s outstanding performance. Suhr’s attitude was also criticized by the NBC announcers.

Scottish track cyclist Chris Hoy won the men’s individual sprint, becoming the first British athlete to win three golds at an Olympics since 1908. Victoria Pendleton won the women’s sprint, raising Britain’s track cycling medal count to 15.
