Israeli forces have launched another assault against Hamas in Gaza, with two people killed by gunfire, according to reports.

30-Second Summary

The assault comes after a short lull following a five-day Israeli assault on Hamas that left over 100 people dead.

Despite the upsurge in violence, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who is visiting the region on a two-day peacekeeping mission, said today that she has been informed that Israeli-Palestinian talks are in the pipeline.

Palestinian President Mahoud Abbas said yesterday that he will not resume negotiations until Israel reaches a truce with Hamas, but altered his conditional stance Wednesday afternoon, saying talks will resume and are not contingent on a cease-fire.

He called the peace process a “strategic choice.”
