The mayor of Mount Isa, Australia, recently invited ugly women to move to the mining town, which suffers from a shortage of female citizens.
Australian Mayor Angers Residents with “Ugly Women” Invite
In an attempt to recruit more female citizens, Mayor John Molony of Mount Isa, an Australian mining town, suggested that the male-dominated population provides “perfect conditions for ‘ugly ducklings’ to flourish into beautiful swans and find true happiness,” The Townsville Bulletin reports.
Residents of both genders objected to the statement. Mount Isa City Councilor Gary Asmus saw the invitation as an insult: “he is actually returning us to the Dark Ages and making the guys that live in this town seem like sex-hungry starved men that will pounce upon the first girl that they see walking down the street.”
One woman noted that while there may be more men in Mount Isa, their caliber is not necessarily higher: "We've got a saying," she said, “that the odds are good, but the goods are odd.”

Herman, Minnesota, also suffered from a female deficiency. In 1994, the town increased its economic opportunities for women in an attempt to even the population. The initiative gained national popularity and prompted the town to create a weekend festivity called “Bachelormania,” where some 1,500 women swarmed the town in search of available single men. The event inspired a 2001 film.

Nome, Alaska, also suffers from a seasonal shortage of female citizens. Although women visit in the summers, the long winters are less gender diverse. According to The New York Times, “Alaska is known for its abundance of single men. Gold miners, oil workers, hunters, trappers and fishermen moving here in droves to live out the fantasy of a rugged, prosperous life on the frontier, a fantasy not often shared by women.”
