Dulcinea's Insight
- Russia is much more than the Kremlin and vodka. Though Moscow and St. Petersburg are must-sees for any visitor, they are often considered far removed from the "real Russia," the western Russian countryside, and the eastern cities and wilderness. As you plan your trip, take into account some lesser-known Russian locales like Irkutsk and Kazan,or any of the numerous other less-traveled cities.
- Throughout this guide you'll find references to the CIS, the Commonwealth of Independent States, an international organization with headquarters in Minsk, Belarus. The CIS was formed on December 8, 1991, in response to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in an agreement signed by leaders of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. Nine additional countries are now a part of the CIS: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The CIS is responsible for coordinating foreign and economic policies of its member states.
- If you have any interest in art, be sure to visit the famed Tretyakov gallery in Moscow, or the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, arguably home to the largest collection of art in the world. Even if you're not an art lover, try to visit one of these two places-they might just change your sensibilities.
