The Value of Comic Books
There is a public misconception that all comic books, when properly stored, become valuable collectibles with age. This isn't so, unfortunately. In recent years, many comics have been mass-produced, which can reduce a title's chances of gaining significant value. There are even some older books, dating back to the golden age, which simply aren't coveted by many collectors. Like anything else, comic book value is very subjective. However, there are certain guidelines for grading and pricing books. The following sites will help you to determine the market value of your comic books.
Dulcinea's Insight
- Collectors should purchase a new Overstreet Price Guide each year. This large book lists almost every mainstream comic book since the golden age, along with an estimate of each comic's value. Most dealers adhere to Overstreet Price Guide's grading standards and prices.
- Appraisals are always subjective, which is something you need to remember if you are selling or buying comic books. However, using widely recognized grading standards will allow you to determine a fairly accurate estimate.
- Be wary of using the word "mint" when describing a comic book. The highest grade a comic book should be rated is "near mint," as it is slightly devalued by merely being held by human hands.
- If you deal with comics as a commodity, then you may consider having some of your more valued comics graded by a professional service, such as Certified Guaranty Company (CGC). CGC is changing the comic book industry, something you can learn more about on the official site, listed below.
