The protagonist of the show "New Amsterdam," John was born Johann Vanderzee in 1607 (Old) Amsterdam. After saving the life of a Lenape shaman on the future island of Manhattan, she blesses (or curses) the young Dutchman to live until he finds and unites with his true love. Since then, the centuries have rolled by, and John has taken many names and many wives, none of whom was John's promised soulmate. But now John thinks he may have found her, and through her, the fulfillment of his wish to age and die as other people do.
Although "New Amsterdam" breaks little new ground, it's not without its charms; whether it can borrow enough immortality from its protagonist to survive for another season remains to be seen. Meanwhile, a pertinent question by Amsterdam's great-grandson also needs answering: what happens if you cut off his head?
