This iconic author is one of this decade's most well-known rags-to-riches story, and the impetus behind a higher literacy rate and revivals of the fantasy and science fiction genres.
J.K. Rowling, the New York Times recently reported, “is up to something.” Spotted by Scottish novelist Ian Rankin’s wife in an Edinburgh café, Rowling is allegedly working on a detective story. Rowling’s personal story of her humble beginnings as a writer was as intriguing to many of her fans as the addictive, cross-cultural qualities of the Harry Potter series. Raising her daughter on her own while on child support in Edinburgh, Rowling took to writing in notebooks while her daughter slept in a stroller. But now that the mystifying and exhausting, eight-part, Harry Potter chapter of billionaire Rowling’s life is over, critics and readers wonder what’s next.
With peers and forebears such as Bloom commenting critically on her work, Rowling can perhaps find courage in a pursuit entirely removed from the Potter series. Rowling’s passion for writing at least confirms that the author will never stop writing, even though she’s long since been in possession of a life fit for the Queen.
