I went to college only 40 minutes from the Napa Valley but it took me two years to finally visit. I stumbled upon it the way some of the most extraordinary discoveries are made—by taking a wrong turn. The sight of the region’s plush terra firma drew me in and I couldn’t turn back. Every visit thereafter confirmed this: the Napa Valley is a visual symphony in its own right, and simply put, an overture to paradise.

Seattle, Washington, is a fortress, protected by the serrated Olympic Mountains, the volcanic peaks of the Cascade Range and snowcapped Mount Rainier. Some refer to it as the Emerald City; I refer to it as “a diamond in the rough.” I’ve been visiting Seattle since I was an infant, and at 9 years old, while running around in Union Square warding off pigeons and making my way through the crowds, it hit me—I was in love with a city.

Situated on the banks of the Columbia River, in the shadow of the Bridge of the Gods, is a glorified cafeteria called Char Burger—a symbol of my youth. Although its cuisine was nothing extraordinary, its décor, a combination of authentic and knock-off American Indian artifacts, had a lot of flavor. A stop at Char Burger became my family’s raison d'être, marking the end of our summer evening drives down the coiled Columbia River Highway.
